Coping with crisis

As a partner in the Inclusive Cities project and WIEGO’s research network, Asiye eTafuleni – as a support organisation for informal workers along with membership-based organisations (MBOs) of informal workers – came together to assess the impact of the recession on home-based workers, street vendors, and waste pickers, across cities and regions in the developing world.

The latest report concluded: “Without informed and decisive actions, poverty and informal employment will remain prominent characteristics of many developing countries, and so will higher economic volatility and vulnerability. This crisis will not be the last; the lesson that must be learned is one of minimising exposure and building capacity for those at the bottom of the economic pyramid.”
